The cold war was the official debut of communism if you will. Up until just after World War 2 communism had not really been a major issue but it really struck the hearts of people during the time of the cold war. Shortly after World War 2 the Soviet Union, with its new territory, created what is known as the Soviet block which was virtually the start of the cold war. At this point the Soviet Union was isolated from the world outside of its blockade and to make things worse they were making advancements to match that the United Sates. The Soviet Union had nuclear missiles and technology to reach space and quite frankly this scared that crap out of the United States. " Countries with capitalist economies such as the United Stated and Great Britain paid close attention to the Soviet Union. When Stalin declared the imminent collapse of capitalism and the establishment of worldwide communism and imposed communism on the territories the country gained after WW 2, western countries increased their efforts to stop communism's spread in a strategy called containment."(source D page 36) IT DID, INDEED, SCARE THE CRAP OUT OF THE US! I REMEMBER BEING SCARED OF THEM EVEN IN THE 1970s!
Although the capitalists of countries of the world tried valiantly to prevent the spread of communism, it seemed like Karl Marx's idea of the spread of communism was flourishing. " The presidents pronouncements became known as the Truman Doctrine, and congress swiftly acted on the president's warning, allocated $ 400 million for Greece and Turkey, which helped both countries keep communism at bay. Over the next four decades, the United States provided billions of dollars in economic and military aid to Western European countries in their struggle against communism." (source D page 38) With all these efforts the United Stated made it seemed useless as the domino affect came full affect. The domino affect in this case would be the spread of communism after it started in the Soviet Union. Countries started conforming to communism faster than efforts to stop it.
